Testing and treatment of SIBO
Chronic bloating, discomfort after meals, unexplained fatigue? These symptoms may be related to bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, commonly referred to as SIBO. You are not alone. At Épithélia, digestive health is our specialty: our team guides you through the screening process and builds an appropriate dietary approach with you, in addition to medical treatment if necessary.
You don’t have to deal with these symptoms alone anymore. A first appointment is enough to get the process started.
What is SIBO
SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) occurs when bacteria normally present in the colon find themselves in too large quantities in the small intestine. This can lead to marked bloating, gas, diarrhea, or constipation, and a feeling of discomfort almost after every meal.
Our clinical approach to SIBO
Our approach begins with a thorough evaluation of your digestive history and symptoms. Our nutritionists ask specific clinical questions, often different from those asked by other professionals, to guide the screening process and refer you, if necessary, to a respiratory test with a physician or appropriate healthcare professional.
Once the diagnosis is confirmed, we develop a personalized action plan that supports the medical treatment, with follow-up continuing after the treatment to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Nutrition and SIBO
Nutrition plays a supportive role before, during, and after treatment for SIBO, particularly to limit symptoms and promote the gradual reintroduction of food. A low-FODMAP diet is sometimes used temporarily in this context, but it must be monitored to avoid unnecessary restrictions in the long term.

What is the link between SIBO and irritable bowel syndrome?
The SIBO is present in some people who have an irritable bowel disorder, but it is not the cause in everyone. An evaluation helps to better understand what is causing your symptoms.
